Vyanti Joseph
Vyanti Joseph is a long-time community organizer and advocate for immigrant and human rights in Georgia. She started as a volunteer, where she engaged suburban moms in East Cobb to get out the vote in the 2016 Presidential Race. After the race, Vyanti was even more committed to increasing voter participation in 2020 and getting more Asian Americans to vote.
“In many of the civic engagement spaces, nobody looked like me - not the voters or the volunteers,” said Joseph. “No one reached out to us, to the South Asian community, so it was clear I needed to personally do more to ensure that my voice and the voice of my community were heard in the civic engagement space.” She formed a coalition of AAPI volunteers that went to the areas and centers where the Asian populations gathered. “We connected with the community and listened not just to get a vote but to build a better future. We were not there just for the moment. We are committed for the long term.”
It is her love for relationship building across various organizations that drives her work with marginalized communities. “I do this work because I want to effect change. What I believe we accomplished was a sense of togetherness in the Asian community. Our coming together during the election season was a beautiful thing.”
Vyanti is currently the Organizing Director for the Asian American Advocacy Fund.
